You might feel insignificant in the face of so many world challenges right now. But researchers have found that taking an action, no matter how small, not only helps solve the world’s problems, but empowers us as individuals. We can do something about improving the air we breathe, reducing causes of asthma and lung disease, and making ourselves healthy. Here are three simple actions that you can take to help:
- Bike, walk or roll to one destination a week where you would normally drive. Make it simple and choose a distance that is not hard for you (even a mile is great). Not only will you help our air quality but it will improve your own health. Studies show that modest aerobic exercise improves lung health, especially for people with asthma.
- Choose an electric vehicle to get where you are going. Many people are buying electric or hybrid cars given current gas prices. But there are many other forms of more affordable electric transportation you can take too. Try renting or buying an e-bike or e-scooter. There are even electric skateboards!
- Donate to an organization that is addressing the issues of clean air or asthma. Bike for Breath is helping the following organizations raise funds for their programs. By pressing on the links below you can go directly to their site and donate:
International Asthma Services Global Cardiology Initiatives (dba Saahns)
Saahns directly helps needy people with asthma around the world. They run free asthma clinics in nine countries (India, Kenya, Mauritius, Myanmar, Philippines, Argentina, Fiji, Russia and the USA). They donate medical equipment and provide education and training to health professionals to sustain the clinics, as well as offering free asthma medications and education to asthma patients.
Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)
AAFA funds research for asthma, runs support groups for people with asthma and allergies and advocates for policies that improve treatment for asthmatics and improve the quality of indoor and outdoor air.
